Peter Moore: Xbox 360 BC controversy a "misinterpretation"

Moore made the apology on Microsoft blogger Major Nelson's podcast, and offered an explanation for his original comments, which he says were merely intended to compare the improvement in the Xbox 360's backward compatibility functions from 2005 to 2006.

Adding to the confusion, Moore says, was that many articles misinterpreted his quote, that "nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility," to mean that Microsoft no longer cares about it. Moore says this is not the case, and that Microsoft still considers backward compatibility to be a top priority. "If [the original inflammatory quote] weren't so traumatic to gamers, it would almost be funny," Moore says in the podcast.

Moore also reminds the audience that over 200 Xbox games are now compatible with the Xbox 360, "with more arriving" throughout the year. Moore notes that Microsoft's goal is still to make "every Xbox game backward compatible with the Xbox 360."

This is why working in the media is so maddening these days -- it's so easy to take these kinds of comments out of context. At the same time, this is a very touchy subject among gamers, and Moore probably should have known better than to make statements that could be so easily misconstrued.

But at least now the record is straight, and we know that Microsoft takes BC seriously. Huzzah!
