Indiana Jones 2007 First Impressions

Visually and in terms of gameplay, Indiana Jones 2007 is shaping up to be an impressive title. One of the coolest new features ensures an almost endless series of gameplay permutations. Lunchbox shares his thoughts on what could be one of the biggest hits of next year.

We spent twenty minutes in LucasArts meeting room off the show floor watching a live gameplay demo of Indiana Jones 2007 (working title) and came away duly impressed - both by the gameplay potential and LucasArts' brand new euphoria technology.

First, the gameplay. During our short demo, we saw portions of two levels of the game. The first was an intersection in San Francisco, circa 1938. In it, Indy engaged in some fisticuffs with a quartet of thugs. Combat appears to be standard variety, with the inclusion of some particularly ferocious haymaker punches.

While the combat is standard, the game's euphoria technology allows for a seemingly endless series of gameplay permutations. According to the game's design team, you can perform the same actions repeatedly, and each time you?ll see a different result. In this level we witnessed Indy grabbing a villain and hurling him against a car and sure enough, the villain's reactions and resulting physics of the crash varied each time. Sometimes he bounced right off the car and sometimes he tried to brace his fall.

Also on this level, Indy threw a villain into a barrel of fireworks. The resulting explosion wound up taking out some bricks in the building, which caused a neon sign to fall across the street onto three levels of fire escapes where some other villains were standing. All of them collapsed, and as the villains fell, some of them reached and clawed for the now-destroyed rails of the fire escape. Others simply dropped like bricks. According to LucasArts, because of the variety introduced by the euphoria engine, it's entirely possible that, in some instances, the fireworks explosion wouldn?t even trigger this sequence of events.

The second level we saw was classic Indiana Jones. Here, Dr. Jones was fighting several villains while perched on a cable car roaring down a San Francisco hill. As Indy duked it out with the bad guys, the dips and bounces shook some of the villains off. Impressively, as the baddies fell off, they were crushed by oncoming traffic.

It's early still, but it's clear that Indiana Jones 2007 has top-notch potential. Stay tuned to Gamepro.com for further coverage.
