EA Loses James Bond License to Activision

Activision secures the rights to Bond games through 2014.

In a surprise move, Activision has snagged the rights to the James Bond movie license from EA, which had previously held the license since 1999. Activision now holds the rights to develop and publish videogames based on the James Bond franchise through 2014.

MGM Interactive and EON Productions granted Activision the exclusive Bond rights, restricting EA from adding to its extensive library of James Bond titles.

"James Bond is the ultimate action movie franchise, and we look forward to establishing a long-term relationship with MGM and EON," says Mike Griffith, president and CEO of Activision Publishing Inc. "The James Bond franchise creates tremendous global expansion opportunities for Activision as it is one of the few video game licenses that appeals equally to domestic and international consumers."

The agreement allows Activision to publish games for all current and next-generation consoles, PC, and handheld systems, based on any of the James Bond movies, as well games that are not based on actual Bond movies.

The specifics of the agreement, including any monetary transactions, were not revealed.

No word yet on any specific games in development, though with the announcement hitting the week before E3, we expect to get some sort of insight into the future of James Bond games at the show.
