The internet gossip mill suggests that Oblivion will be heading to the PlayStation 3 and PSP sometime in 2006. But is there any truth to the rumors?
A poster on gossip hotbed Gaming Age claims to have inside word that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is heading to the PlayStation 3 and PSP later in 2006.
According to the post, the PlayStation 3 version of Oblivion will arrive close to the PS3's scheduled November launch date. Of course, the source is unnamed and is thus highly dubious. Nonetheless, the possibility exists.
We contacted Bethesda Softworks, the developers of Oblivion, for their official response. "We have no announced plans for Oblivion on any other platforms other than PC and Xbox 360," said Pete Hines, Bethesda's vice president of marketing and public relations. "If that changes, we'll let you know." While the statement definitely doesn't confirm that Oblivion is coming to Sony's camp, it doesn't rule out that possibility, either.
The possibility of a portable PSP version of Oblivion sounds particularly enticing, but does bring up questions about the flexibility of Sony's UMD format. Can the UMD stream data fast enough to keep up with Oblivion's massive environments? And will that level of disc activity drain the PSP's batteries faster than normal?
