Command & Conquer is back. But will C&C fans embrace a return to the Tiberium universe?
The rumors are true: EA has announced that Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars will land on the PC in 2007. EA didn't share details on the exact date.
Command & Conquer 3 is the latest in a widely respected series that, together with the Warcraft and Starcraft games, defined the real-time strategy genre as we know it today.
In the announcement, EA divulges that Command & Conquer 3 will go "back to its roots in the Tiberium universe," a more futuristic setting complete with sci-fi weaponry. This detail could prove to be a mixed blessing for C&C fans, many of whom prefer the more realistic, Cold War-inspired C&C: Red Alert games.
At any rate, little is known about the storyline except that the game is set in 2047. Tiberium -- "a self-replicating alien substance" that also acts like a radioactive resource -- has overrun the Earth. A coalition of Earth's most advanced nations is fighting to contain the Tiberium, but Kane and his Brotherhood of NOD wish to use Tiberium to mutate Earth's residents.
We'll have more news on this breaking title soon.
