Sony Officially Drops PS2 Price to $129

Sony has lowered the price of the PlayStation 2 from $149 to $129

As expected, Sony has lowered the price of the PlayStation 2 from $149 to $129 in a move to drive even more support for its current-generation console.

Analysts expected the drop in price to occur prior to E3 as the gaming publisher readies to show off the PlayStation 3 at next month's show. The announcement came with a flurry of PS2 facts and numbers, touting the worldwide saturation of the console and its games.

"Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer," says Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of SCEA. "While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform."

Sony's price drop announcement puts pressure on Microsoft to roll back the price of the Xbox, still at a suggested retail price of $179.99 (bundled with Forza Motorsport).
