Blizzard Confirms StarCraft: Ghost Postponed "Indefinitely"

Blizzard to focus on next-gen console design, Starcraft: Ghost delayed "indefinitely"

The future of Blizzard's much-delayed console game StarCraft: Ghost is in doubt.

Blizzard recently announced that it had "indefinitely postpone[d] production" on StarCraft: Ghost, the upcoming stealth game that was originally scheduled to hit the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube. Ghost was intended to serve as a mass market-friendly spin-off for the company's phenominally successful StarCraft series.

The news came as part of an announcement that declared Blizzard would focus its development efforts on next-generation consoles like the Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo Revolution.

As for the future of StarCraft: Ghost, don't hold your breath -- Blizzard notes that "further specifics on plans for StarCraft: Ghost" and the company's future next-gen games will come "at a later date."

StarCraft: Ghost was first unveiled in early 2003 and has since seen several major delays. Blizzard last showed the game at E3 2005, but following that demo Ghost dropped off the radar. The game had made significant improvements, but looked to be a fairly routine third-person stealth/action title -- feedback from the gaming press was mixed.

The indefinite delay almost certainly means that Blizzard is radically retooling the game, though an outright cancellation isn't out of the question.
