GDC: Nintendo Shows Video of Zelda DS Game 'Phantom Hourglass'

Nintendo unveils first video trailer of

Though the Nintendo keynote at GDC didn't blow many minds, it did unleash one juicy surprise: a new Zelda game developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS.

The game is called The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and will be presented in the same visual style of the Gamecube Zelda game The Wind Waker.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata showed a brief teaser trailer -- a clip is available on Nintendo Europe's site -- that depicted how the game would be played on the DS's touchscreen. It appears that players will be able to make handwritten notes on the in-game map. The stylus appears to have uses in combat, too, such as guiding Link's boomerang, charting courses over the sea, and solving other puzzles.

As for a release date, Iwata said that the game would be available for the DS "later this year."
