2005's best action game returns on the PlayStation 2
Today Sony announced that God of War II will be released on the PlayStation 2, not the PlayStation 3, as many originally predicted. The first trailer was shown today at the Sony keynote at the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose, introduced by creator David Jaffe. The sequel to one of 2005's best action games and winner of over a dozen 'Game of the Year' awards is tentatively scheduled for a Q1 2007 release.
As God of War II opens, vicious warrior Kratos sits atop his Olympus throne as the new God of War. To end his continued torment, Kratos must harness new magical abilities -- the announcement includes mention of "wind, ice, and much more" -- as well as solve new puzzles, which are apparently more intertwined with the storyline than in the first game.
Though details are scarce, the game will also feature new characters, lots of puzzle solving, and more exploration.
The GDC trailer showcased some of the game's new moves, and a sneak peek at a patented God of War boss battle in which Kratos hacked the wings of a gigantic Gryphon while in mid-air. Other footage showed him gutting gigantic wild boar, blinding a cyclops, and decapitating the monstrous three-headed dog Cerberus. The visuals looked cleaner and sharper than in the first game, with liberal showers of blood and viscera.
We'll have much more on God of War II as E3 approaches, but the GDC video looked extremely promising.
