Blizzard Retraction: Gay Guilds, Players Welcome in World of Warcraft

Blizzard COO offers full explanation of recent controversy over gay player

Blizzard's chief operating officer, Paul Sams, has issued a final edict regarding the recent controversies surrounding the citation of a World of Warcraft player who invited players to join a "LGBT-friendly guild."

Sams expresses that Blizzard's "initial reaction to [the player's] in-game announcement of a LGBT-friendly guild was, quite frankly, an unfortunate mistake."

Sams notes that Blizzard has cleared that player's record. Furthermore, the developer has carried out "additional training" for its legion of World of Warcraft game masters, and adds that "mentioning or discussing sexual orientation or gender identity in a non-insulting fashion" is now officially acceptable. LGBT players are now free to "recruit members in the same manner as any other guilds."

This story sparked a firestorm last month when a World of Warcraft game master cited a player for announcing a gay-friendly guild, and later upheld the decision by arguing that it was in the interests of protecting minority players.
