nVidia CEO on PS3; Evidence Points to Post-April PS3 Launch

nVidia CEO divulges that graphics chip maker won't receive PS3 royalities by April

Is the PlayStation 3 delayed from its planned spring launch?

Conflicting reports, the most recent based on contradictory comments made by Sony officials, have made the topic of the PS3's release date more of a guessing game than a precise product launch. The most recent controversy had an unnamed Sony official and SCE spokesman Kei Sakaguchi making conflicting statements about a PS3 delay.

Adding to that confusion is the late-breaking news that nVidia's CEO, Jen-Hsun Hwang, has provided new evidence that Sony's PS3 is in danger of slipping past its spring launch. nVidia designed the PS3's high-end graphics processor.

In a conference call, Hwang noted that nVidia's RSX graphics technology--the workhorse of the PS3's graphics system--was finished. But he added that Sony wouldn't be paying the company in the current financial quarter, which ends in April.

This could mean that Sony is internally planning for the PS3 to launch after April--some accounts have pointed to an August release. Another possibility is that nVidia has accepted a postponed payment for its work on the PS3, and that the PS3 is still on track for its spring launch.
