Nintendo capitalizes on DS's success by adding web browsing, TV tuner features
In a bid to capitalize on the DS system's strong sales worldwide, Nintendo is adding two new features for Japanese DS owners.
One is a web-browsing cartridge, based on the Opera browsing standard. This cart will allow Japanese DS owners to use the DS's wi-fi capabilities to browse internet sites on both DS screens.
Data entry will take place on the DS's touchscreen, with stylus-activated mouse commands and a tiny keyboard, much like a standard PDA.
Nintendo has yet to release a price or release date for this feature, and it rumored to be considering a US launch.
Another new development is the announcement of a digital TV tuner for the DS. Because it ties into the digital television broadcast standard that is set to start in Japan this April, the AP reports, the device would be a Japanese-only release.
