The Redmond-based Zipper Interactive to become part of the SCE Worldwide Studios network.
Sony has acquired Redmond-based Zipper Interactive, creators of the popular online series SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals. The developer will become part of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios network.
Though Sony isn't disclosing any financial terms, the current management team will continue to run the studio's day-to-day operations.
Sony has been on quite the acquisition spree lately. Just over a month ago, the company acquired Guerilla Games, best known for developing the popular online PS2 shooter Killzone.
By acquiring established developers of already popular franchises, Sony is clearly not relying solely on third-party support for the PS3. By preparing to release several waves of in-house PS3 megahits, Sony is positioning itself as a far stronger software publishing presence--particularly in terms of online gameplay--than it did with the PS2.
