It's been a difficult year for the publisher of BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2.
Majesco Games--publisher of the BloodRayne games--has recently announced that they are withdrawing from the "premium console market." Moving forward, the struggling publisher will focus on producing budget and handheld titles.
This announcement comes on word that the company's financial state--already in poor shape following a money-losing 2004 fiscal year--has plummeted even further. The company lost nearly $12 million in 2004; that number soared to $70.2 million in 2005, partly due to the poor sales of high-budget games like Advent Rising (penned by sci-fi author Orson Scott Card) and Psychonauts.
Moving to the less risky handheld and value markets will give the publisher time to recover from its recent financial blows. The company has also canceled several of its upcoming games--including a planned videogame version of the film Taxi Driver--and also plans to lay off some 20 percent of its staff in order to regain profitability.
