Valve Did Not Approve In-Game Counter-Strike Ads

In-game advertising company displeases the powerful developer.

Several days ago, we reported that a company called Engage In-Game Advertising had run in-game ads in "the most popular online action game played among men 18 to 34." That game turned out to be Counter-Strike, a fact that was confirmed by Engage's Vice President of Business Development, David Smith.

In reporting the original story, GamePro contacted Valve Software--developers of the Half-Life and Counter-Strike games--for their take on in-game advertisements.

Today, we heard back from Valve's Doug Lombardi. His response follows:

"At no time did Valve grant permission nor discuss these advertisements with Engage. As such, this is now a legal matter. Advertising or any other commercial use of our games requires our written permission."

A call to Engage's David Smith was not immediately returned.
