One of the most popular online games of all time gets advertising.
When we first read this press release, we couldn't figure out exactly what Engage In-Game Advertising was trying to say.
The release trumpets what Engage considers to be a successful run of in-game advertising "in the most popular online action game played among men 18 to 34."
Huh?
We weren't sure what they were getting at until we gave Engage representative David Smith a call. Turns out that "the most popular online action game," etc, turned out to be Valve's tactical shooter Counter-Strike, which was "provided by" a gaming media networks called IGA. The ads displayed Subway products.
This is an interesting development for Counter-strike players, who don't have to pay an online fee but enjoy limitless multiplayer matches.
Will in-game advertising be the new income source of choice for online games? We checked with Valve's Doug Lombardi for clarification, so hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this one soon.
