Nintendo DS Shortage Strikes Japan, Leads to $300 Prices

The DS continues to hammer away on the PSP.

As Nintendo's DS continues to hammer the PSP in the sales department, demand for the DS has reached critical mass in Japan.

The situation was bad enough to prompt Nintendo of Japan to recently issue a press release formally apologizing to retailers and fans for the shortages.

In other news, gaming blog Kotaku passes along word that the Nintendo DS is available on the Japanese Amazon.com site...for the steep price of 29,500 yen (roughly $300 American). In the U.S., the DS starts at $129.

Will hot games like Resident Evil: Deadly Silence prompt a similar DS shortage in the U.S.? Time will tell--Resident Evil ships in early February.
