The DS Dominates the PSP in 2005

Nintendo continues its strength in the handheld market.

Who's winning the portable war? There's no longer any doubt: Nintendo.

Despite fierce competition from Sony's slick PSP, the Nintendo DS is ahead at the sales register. A Forbes story today confirmed that Nintendo has sold some 4.2 million Nintendo DS systems to U.S. customers since its November 2004 launch. Nintendo claims to have sold 10 million DS units worldwide. But that's not all: in North America, Nintendo also sold 4.6 million Game Boy Advance units.

Sony, by comparison, claims to have sold some 3.2 million PSPs in America since its March 2005 launch. Worldwide PSP numbers aren't yet known, but are not likely to approach the DS's impressive milestone of 10 million.

Though Sony has made a solid showing with the PSP--and given handheld juggernaut Nintendo its first real taste of competition in ages--it's likely that the PSP's higher asking price ($249 versus $139 for the Nintendo DS) ultimately cost them sales.
