DS to Support Handwriting Recognition

Nintendo reveals plan to integrate text recognition in the DS handheld.

Nintendo has announced a partnership with Zi Corporation to bring handwriting recognition support to the Nintendo DS handheld. The DS, with its touchscreen technology and included stylus, will soon allow developers to integrate handwriting elements into their games.

Zi Corporation's Decuma handwriting system supports all Roman languages, traditional and simplified Chinese, and all three Japanese alphabets.

Though no actual date has been set, Nintendo will begin to roll out the new feature on future DS units. There are currently no products or games that display the recognition feature, but it is assumed that developers will use it to create puzzle and education-based experiences.
