Australian judges rule in favor of legal mod chips, assert no copyright infringement.
The Australian High Court has ruled in favor of legal mod chips for video game consoles in Australia. Once installed in a video game system, a mod chip allows users to play games sold outside of the country. All six judges in the court ruled in favor of making mod chips legal, thus ending a four-year long trial. In addition, the High Court declared that because games are not being reproduced, no copyright laws are being broken when a mod chip is used or when a game is imported.
The verdict is a win for gamers in Australia because many console games are not currently available in the Australian territory.
