Japanese Prefecture of Saitama Bans Sale of GTA: 3 to Minors.

Saitama, a Japanese prefecture that borders Tokyo, has banned the sale of Grand Theft Auto III to minors. According to numerous Japanese sites, the decision was made in response to the game's overly violent nature.

Saitama governor Kiyoshi Ueda in the Mainichi Daily News described the game as, "Obviously harmful," and commented on the necessity for the wholesome upbringing of youths in Japan.

Because GTA: San Andreas has not yet been released in Japan, the restriction only applies to GTA: 3. Capcom (the game's Japanese publisher) is currently trying to have the decision overturned.
