Nintendogs Pawing at the One Million Mark

The DS puppy sim boosts DS sales across the globe.

There are no "dog days of summer" for Nintendo; Nintendogs is a smash hit. The virtual puppy simulator for the handheld Nintendo DS is quickly approaching one million worldwide units sold, and is selling DS systems to boot.

While Japanese sales account for about 80% of the worldwide total, the Tamagotchi-esque Nintendogs is also catching on here in the states, with over 200,000 units sold in its first week on the US market.

Thanks to the Nintendogs release and simultaneous DS price drop to $129.99, the former has helped the latter to outperform Sony's PSP in the portable market. Can the PSP climb back? The upcoming October release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories should be a good tell.
