California Passes Violent Game Bill

Schwarznegger to decide fate of CA violent game bill.

The California state senate and assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of AB1179, a bill that would restrict the sale of violent video games to minors in California. If signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, California would become the second state (behind Illinois) to pass such a law.

Assemblyman Leland Yee, a strong opponent to adult themes in gaming, proposed the bill that began as AB450. Like the Illinois Safe Games Act, the bill proposes a $1000 fine upon any retailer that sells a violent title to a minor, as well as a large "18" sticker to be applied to "violent" games in addition to the current ESRB ratings label.

Governor Schwarznegger has 30 days to either sign or veto the bill that the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) strongly opposes. The ESA is encouraging the Governor to strike down the bill, deeming it unconstitutional and a restriction upon first amendment rights. The ESA is also promoting the Governor to work with the gaming industry on a more effective resolution that puts parents in the authoritative role.
