Video Game Industry on Track for Record Year

First half sales numbers set the pace for a stellar 2005.

Despite the recent San Andreas ratings ruckus, the video game industry has shown record sales numbers for the first half of 2005, up 21% year-over-year. If the trend continues, the gaming biz as a whole is well on its way to another record year.

Lead by elevated portable hardware and software sales, gaming sector sales reached $4.1 billion from January to June compared to $3.4 billion for the same period in 2004.

The total video game market grew 9.2% for the first half of 2005, lead by top sales of Sony's Gran Turismo 4, Nintendo's Pokemon Emerald, and EA's MVP Baseball 2005.

The PC market showed the only significant sales decline, down 10.5% for the first half of the year.
