SOE Gets The Matrix Online

Bluer--er, greener skies for the poor performing MMORPG.

Sony Online Entertainment and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced an exclusive long-term licensing agreements allowing SOE to develop a DC Comics massively multiplayer online game for PC and next generation consoles, as well as the acquisition of The Matrix Online game by SOE.

The acquisition of The Matrix Online is being seen as a way to salvage the MMO, which despite being launched with much anticipation has seen interest rapidly drop in the past months from consumers. While no official number of subscribers have been revealed, rumors have been circulating that subscription are below 150,000, and that a sizable bulk of its staff have been laid off.

"By working with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment we will fuse the knowledge SOE has in the online space with some of Warner Bros.' phenomenal properties," said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. "SOE will work closely with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics to maintain the authenticity consumers demand from the DC Comics franchises. We will also take steps to continue the same high level of service that subscribers have come to expect from The Matrix Online game."

SOE has not revealed any details of the MMO based on DC Comics--but you can expect some type of superhero MMO akin to City of Heroes. The game is slated for release on the PC and next generation gaming platforms, and is currently slated for a Q4 2007 release.
