LucasArts Announces Star Wars Battlefront II on Consoles and PC

Next installment already slated to hit this year.

LucasArts has officially announced Star Wars Battlefront II, the next installment to the Battlefield-esque shooter franchise. Unsurprisingly featuring environments from Episode III, the game will focus more on the single-player aspect of the game, leading players through a story-based campaign. In development at Pandemic Studios, the game is slated for release in fall 2005 on the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC.

"The original was a huge success for LucasArts and we plan to build on that success to make Star Wars Battlefront II exceed what we did for the first game in every measurable way," said John Geoghegan, Vice President of Global Marketing and Sales, LucasArts. "For Star Wars Battlefront, we joined forces with our colleagues at Lucasfilm to launch the game day-and-date with the Classic trilogy on DVD. Star Wars Battlefront II's campaign will be even bigger, including promotions with major national partners, as well as unprecedented in-store support."

New for the franchise is space combat, enabling you to take control of TIE Fighters and X-Wings to take on and board enemy ships. Stage locations for the next installment include volcanic Mustafar, a space battle above Coruscant, and interior conflicts inside Leia's blockade runner, the Tantive IV. Players will also be able to "feel the Force as a Jedi" in specific moments of the game.

Online play makes a return as well, though specifics still remain unknown. Expect more to be unveiled at this year's E3, held next month.
