DS Sales Top 500,000 Units

With 90 percent of all available units sold, some retailers reported shortages.

Nintendo announced that more than 500,000 Nintendo DS sold during Thanksgiving week, selling more than 90 percent of all available units in the United States. The company expects the handheld to sell out within days.

The company expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America by the end of 2004. Nintendo interestingly contrasted it with Apple's iPod, which took 19 months to hit a million--perhaps to show that the DS is no "kid's console," appealing to older technophiles as well.

"Consumers have voted the Nintendo DS as the hot item this holiday, so if you see one, you'd better buy it," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Nintendo owns the hand-held market, and once again we're the hit of the holiday season."

The GBA was no underperformer either, as more than 800,000 Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP units sold last week.

The GameCube posted solid sales, selling 250,000 of its GameCube and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! bundle since its release in mid-November.

The oft-compared Sony PSP won't find itself in any Christmas stockings this year (at least in U.S.), as it has been delayed till early 2005. The PSP is projected to retail at $200, $50 more than the DS.
