Dragon Quest VIII Ships 3 Million Units

Regardless of reviews, the venerable RPG destined to sell like hotcakes in Japan.

The hugely popular Dragon Quest franchise seems on track for success with its latest installment as Dragon Quest VIII has shipped 3 million units in Japan.

Called Dragon Warrior in the states, the game never took off in North America, partially due to the lack of recognition of comic artist Akira Toriyama, most widely renowned for his manga Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump in Japan.

Following the "Tenku" saga (translating as Heavens), the game is the first in its franchise to feature full 3D characters, and visible characters during combat--features that became standard for CRPGs years ago. Despite its simple mechanics that have largely remained the same since Dragon Quest I, the franchise still is going strong--and without any significant RPGs this holiday season it will easily surpass one million units.
