Half-Life 2 Coming to Arcades in Japan

Taito to bring the PC shooter to arcades in Japan in 2005.

Japanese gaming site Game Watch has reported that Taito is porting the PC shooter Half-Life 2 to arcades, and will be released on its Type X platform in summer 2005.

A cockpit-styled arcade cabinet, the game will feature 5.1 surround sound and a widescreen monitor. Based on a customized version of the PC game, Half-Life 2 for arcades will have the following modes of play:

  • Story Mode - A single player mode
  • Battle Mode - A mode that allows multiple players to battle each other from across the country
  • Mission Mode - A cooperative network multiplayer mode that has players working together to complete missions

The multiplayer system makes use of the Taito NESYS (or Net Entry System), also used in drift-racing game Battle Gear 3 and Zoid Infinity, which stores multiplayer data on a server.

Taito's official page has yet to confirm the news, but the Type X page does that a "large game" is coming soon.
