Nintendo's portable powerhouse prices out at under 80 clams. Not a bad deal at all.
In a press release today, Nintendo of America announced that the Game Boy Advance SP will drop in price tomorrow. Currently priced at $99.99 USD, the system will be repriced at $79.99 USD -- a savings of $20.Officially the price drop is to encourage holiday sales of the system, but it is also a strategic move in preperation for the upcoming Nintendo DS and Sony PSP launches. By moving the Game Boy Advance SP units now, Nintendo frees up inventory for its new Nintendo DS units as well as providing an attractive alternative to Sony's PSP which is expected to launch at a much higher price. Parents who purchase a discounted Game Boy Advance SP may be less inclined to pick up a PSP when it ships.
"This new price point makes Game Boy Advance SP affordable for the vast majority of the mass market, and gives people a 'gotta-have' gift to automatically put at the top of their holiday gift lists," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.
In addition to the price drop, Nintendo will also be kicking off a new "Start Mayhem" marketing campaign tomorrow. The campaign is designed to promote the new price point as well as personify the system by giving each color a different "personality." You will be able to view the campaign videos at www.startmayhem.com beginning tomorrow.
