From Software Announces New Samurai Action Game for PS2

Medieval Japanese action game to be based on a popular 12th century samurai.

From Software has unveiled on a teaser site a new action game in development, called Yoshitune Eiyuden (barbarously translated as The Story of Hero Yoshitsune). Based on the almost mythical tale of 12th century samurai Yoshitsune Minamoto, the game is described as a "Gassen Action," which translates as battle action--implying a Dynasty Warriors-esque melee skirmish. No details have been unveiled so far, except for three characters--Ushiwakamaru, young Yoshitsune; Minamotono Yoshitsune; and Musashibou Benkei, faithful sidekick of Yoshitsune who supposedly died standing up while defending Yoshitsune from a hail of arrows.

For the Japanese, the story is a classic Judas/Jesus betrayal tale. According to the romanticized historical accounts, Yoshitsune was the charismatic younger brother of Minamotono Yoritomo (who overthrew the ruling Heike aristocrats and set up a new government in Kamakura). Fueled by jealousy and feeling threatened by his younger brother's influence in the Kyoto aristocracy, the older brother sends a huge armor to kill his loyal younger brother.

The game only supports one-player gameplay, and is slated for release in January 2005.
