Shin Megami Tensei MMORPG In Works

Official site opens, showing bits of the story and character class details.

Atlus has revealed that an MMORPG is in the works based on the anime/console RPG franchise Shin Megami Tensei. Entitled Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine, it will be the first MMORPG for the developer.

As the console RPG, the game takes place in post-apocalyptic Japan. Due to a series of disastrous earthquakes, the country is sent into disarray, and essentially two factions are formed--LAW, which serves to protect the country, or CHAOS, a group of individuals set on overthrowing the rules and order dictated by LAW. Players can also choose to be neutral, not taking sides with either faction. In the midst of this civil conflict, a third party entered the fray from another world, whose intentions are yet unknown.

Regardless of faction, classes are divided into three groups, Close Support, Ranged Support, and an Exorcist class. As the class names suggest, Close Support specializes in melee weapons such as swords, Ranged in ranged weapons such as guns, and magic for the Exorcist class. Players will be able to customize the physical attributes of their character including eyes, nose, and hair.

Other points of interest are a real-time strategy mode for battles against a group of players, and the fact that the game will be played over a single server--all players will be contained in one universe.
