SCE's Kutaragi To Head Sony's Home Electronics and Semiconductor Divisions

SCE President to oversee the PSX as well as the development of the cell chip.

At Sony's annual corporate strategy conference in Japan, SCE President Ken Kutaragi announced that he will head the company's home electronics and semiconductor divisions in addition to his position of heading the video games division, effective June 22.

The home electronics division, which recently absorbed the Blue-Ray division (next-gen optical disk technology that allows for more data to be stored by using a more narrow blue laser), has recently seen lackluster sales, with the PSX not being readily embraced by Japanese consumers. Kutaragi hinted that the media console may see a more compact redesign in the future.

The semiconductor division is significant for the future of the video game division, as it is in charge of the development of the Cell processor, which will power the PlayStation 3. No additional information has been unveiled as of yet surrounding the .65nm chip, produced in collaboration with Toshiba and IBM.
