Sony Announces Athens 2004: The Official Videogame of the Olympic Games

Track & field, swimming and gymnastics to be featured in the official Olympic video game.

Sony announced a partnership with International Sports Multimedia, exclusive licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for Interactive Entertainment software, to develop a PlayStation 2 game based on the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Developed by Eurocom, the game features seven venues: the Olympic Stadium for Athletics, the Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Center, the Olympic Aquatic Center, the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall, the Olympic Indoor Hall for Gymnastics, the Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Center and the Panathinaiko Stadium for Archery - recreated for the game using architectural plans and photography. Athlete's movements will be modeled using motion capture technology.

Events to be featured include track and field events, such as High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Discus Throw, Javelin Throw, Pole Vault, Shot Put, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m sprint, and the 100m and 110m Hurdle events. For swimming, there will be 100m Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle. Gymnastics include Floor Exercise, Rings and Vault Events.

Athens 2004: The Official Videogame of the Olympic Games will be released in July 2004, weeks before the actual event starts.
