Half-Life 2 Coming This Summer

Valve sets new release date after hackers leak source code.

After months of silence, Valve has finally given word on a release date. Speaking to CNN Money, Doug Lombardi, director of marketing for Valve, said that the company "is currently targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2." This statement counters an earlier claim from publisher Vivendi Universal Games, which said that the source code theft would delay the game until April 2004.

The primary reason for the delay was the October leak of the game engine (as well as middleware components), which forced Valve to rewrite all of the network security code. Troika's Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines also uses the Half-Life 2 engine and the leak forced the developer to delay its game to Spring 2005.

Since its unveiling at E3 last year, no game has garnered as much hype and gossip as Half-Life 2. The source code theft has only created more buzz, with skeptics claiming a PR conspiracy and release date rumors flying about the internet. Valve will continue to keep its lips tightly shut, however it is expected to reveal additional information about the game during this year's E3 which will be held May 12-14 in Los Angeles, CA.
