Astro Boy to Use Havok Engine

Sonic Team's action game will feature the physics engine used in Half-Life 2

Sega announced the development of Astro Boy for the PS2, showcasing its use of the Havok physics engine. This is the first time a Japanese game used the engine, and the game showed signs of the PS2 hitting its hardware limits with a slightly less than silky-smooth framerate.

"Tesuwan Atomu" (Astro Boy in the states) is a classic manga/anime series by Tezuka Osamu. Atomu, the main character, is a small cute but powerful robot that defeats his enemies by using his signature rocket punch move. Being true to the series, the game will allow Astro Boy to freely fly about, with Sega showing a scene of him going through a pile of boxes. Other characters from the series like Atlus and Pluto will also be in the game.

Given the hardware limitations, only select parts of the game will use the Havok engine, like items in the environment or bosses.

Astro Boy is slated for release in March of 2004.
