GameCube Sales Surge as Mario Kart Tops the Charts in Japan

Sales of Nintendo's console rose 145 percent

With the launch of Mario Kart: Double Dash! last week, Japanese GameCube console sales have jumped by 145 percent. Mario Kart sold about 208,000 units over the weekend, making it one of the most successful game releases in Japan in the past few months. Media Create's reports showed lagging sales recently, as new releases couldn't hit the 100,000 unit mark.

The GameCube's market share jumped up to 28 percent with the launch of the game, moving closer to the PS2, which had 30 percent share. However, the PS2 will probably gain a bigger lead in the week's to come, as Sony has announced price cuts and new bundle packs for the holiday season.
