Sony Cuts PlayStation 2 Price in Japan

SCE to cut the price of their console, offer new console colors and a bundle pack

Seeking to boost year-end sales of the PS2, Sony Computer Entertainment will cut the price of the console by about one-fifth in Japan from mid-November, it said Tuesday. The recommended retail price of the console will fall on Nov. 13 to ?19,800. (US$180) SCE will also shave ?5,000 off the price of its broadband pack, which couples the console with a broadband adapter on the same day giving it a retail price of ?29,800 ($270). The PlayStation 2 was launched in Japan in March 2000 and sales have begun to decline as it approaches its fourth year on sale.

Different color versions of the PS2 and bundle packs will also be offered this holiday season. The assortment includes a ?midnight black? PS2, a white PS2 bundled with Gran Turismo 4 Prologue for ?22,000 ($200), and a gold PS2 bundled with "Kidosenshi Z Gundam" for ?35,000 ($320).

The price cuts in Japan mirror those in the U.S. in August when Sony Computer Entertainment America cut the price of the console to $179.
