Origin announces Ultima X: Odyssey as successor to Ultima Online

Thankfully, the X doesn?t stand for Ultima Xtreme.

After years of success with Ultima Online, Origin Systems and Electronic Arts are finally offering gamers an upgrade to the old workhorse. Today Origin announced that a new MMORPG Ultima is in development, entitled Ultima X: Odyssey.

The game will use the Unreal engine and be in full 3D, pulling many Ultima gamers out of the 2D age for good. Origin is also touting the game?s ?Odyssey Adventure System?, which will generate personalized dungeons and adventure areas for players, allowing them to play the game without outside interference, if they so choose. And, in the true spirit of the Ultima series, the game will also focus on the eight Virtues, with those who master them unlocking new abilities and eventually, after mastering all eight, attaining the status of Avatar. To meet this goal, players can band together and support an Avatar candidate, helping the character reach that goal.

Ultima X: Odyssey is scheduled for a winter release, and for more information keep checking EA?s official UXO site.
