A game-device maker encourages online cheating.
Fire International, the British outfit that provides the software for Mad Catz' line of GameShark cheat devices, sent out a release today touting itself as the first source of cheats for PS2 online title SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs, effectively encouraging gamers to ruin online gameplay for fair SOCOM players. The cheat codes were released for the Xploder cheat device and work on the European version of SOCOM, which came out last month in the region. "Prior to the launch of the game, Fire International's dedicated cheat domain, Xploder.net, went live with the first cheat code for the title," Fire wrote in its release, "which enables unlimited ammunition and now boasts cheat codes for no recoil, rapid fire, unlimited grenades and a code which allows the player to steal their opponent's ammunition!"
On Fire's official online forum, the response to the news release was swift and biting. "You're a company specializing in ruining other companies' products and their customers' investment in said product," one poster wrote. "I'm not at all happy about the Xploder cheats for online games," another reader said. "It ruined the online game in the States, and I can see the UK going the same way."
Playing SOCOM online right now can be a somewhat dicey proposition?thanks to unofficial codes for the GameShark and other devices, many gamers are cheating their way to victory at the expense of users playing the game fair and square. Sony Computer Entertainment claims that SOCOM 2, due out November in America, will solve these issues and also feature the ability to ban cheaters from online play.
