Spy Fiction Page Opens

A new MGS-ish game from a brand-new developer.

Access Games, a new game publisher founded by folks from Konami and old Sony developer Whoopee Camp, opened up an official page over the weekend for Spy Fiction, an original stealth-action shooter that borrows equally from Metal Gear Solid and spy flicks like Mission: Impossible. The PlayStation 2 title is due to hit Japanese stores this winter; a U.S. release has yet to be announced.

Spy Fiction covers the exploits of SEA, a shady underground spy organization funded by an anonymous group of citizens. The identity and native country of SEA's operatives are classified information, and the missions it carries out takes its members from old Soviet chemical plants to the battlefields of the Middle East. Controlling the PHANTOM team (the SEA squad that handles all the trickiest, most dangerous missions), your goal in Spy Fiction is to infiltrate a pharmaceutical company known as a vanguard in medicinal research. To PHANTOM members Billy Bishop and Sheila Crawford it appears to be a routine reconnaissance mission, but the assignment (as it tends to do in games like these) soon takes a turn towards the sinister...

As you can see from the screenshots below, Spy Fiction's basic gameplay takes much of its inspiration from Konami's last two Metal Gear Solid titles. The game's not a total ripoff, however?as shown on Access' web page, Billy and crew have the ability to rappel down certain shafts, kicking off walls to change direction mid-air and flattening their bodies to avoid laser sensors. The PHANTOM team's combat suits also have a built-in optical camouflage system?sidle up against a wall, rest for a moment, and you'll gradually turn semi-invisible, a trick that's great for sneaking past certain enemies.

More info on Spy Fiction should be forthcoming as the Japanese release date nears, so stay tuned.
