Another Word or Two on Tales of Symphonia

Getting that mint-green GC won't be so hard after all.

At an informational conference for retailers held in Tokyo yesterday, Nintendo and Namco revealed a few more details on Tales of Symphonia, the original GameCube RPG Namco held a press event to unveil yesterday. Along with a few clarifications on the game system, the two companies revealed their plans for advertising the game, including what they intend to do with the lovely mint-green GameCube Namco showed off at Tuesday's event.

Although the details haven't really been worked out yet, Namco's intention is to sell the limited-edition Cube right alongside Symphonia when it hits Japanese stores August 29. The system would include TOS packed in, and there's also the possibility that a Game Boy Player could be included in the package (colored green to match, hopefully). No official price has been decided, but it'll likely be the cost of the hardware added to the price of the game?in other words, 21,600 yen ($183) without the GB Player or 26,600 yen with it.

Tales of Symphonia will be Namco's first GameCube RPG, and it'll also likely be the prettest RPG on the Cube right off the bat?Namco confirmed today that the title will support progressive mode, meaning a crystal-clear display for anyone with a compatible TV set. The encounter system works "symbolically" (in other words, you can see enemies on the world map and can avoid them if you don't want to fight), and most of the game's cutscenes will use 3D polygon characters?it's unknown if there'll be any anime scenes apart from the opening. Namco hasn't confirmed what they'll give to customers who reserve the game in Japan yet, but their current plan calls for a CD-ROM disc that includes the opening movie and a set of game sketches from Tales character designer Keisuke Fujishima. The only bad news: there won't be any connectivity between Symphonia and Tales of Phantasia, the SNES RPG remake Namco will release for the GBA August 1.

Stay tuned for more info on both RPGs as it comes.
