Anything's possible with film rights these days.
Capcom announced today that they have leased out the film-option rights for hip PS2 action game Devil May Cry to Japanese film distributor Gaga Communications. The optioning gives Gaga exclusive rights to produce a live-action film based on the series, with an eye towards international theatrical release sometime in 2005.In the press release they sent out today, Gaga said that they "will create major, thrilling Hollywood entertainment by taking advantage of the game's stylish visuals and dark, cool hero Dante's hyper action." No director or cast has been announced yet, but Gaga plans to spend about $40 million producing the film, putting it on the pricey side as far as movies based on games are concerned.
Capcom, which had a hit on their hands last year with the Resident Evil movie, are apparently hopeful that lightning can strike twice. Or three times, even: the publisher already licensed out the Onimusha film rights to Gaga late last year.
There are an estimated 15 to 25 film projects based on video games in the works right now, although many of these are still in the option stage and may never actually be made into movies. Gaga Communications is one of the production outfits at the forefront of this movement, buying up the rights to Japanese games and anime and announcing film projects at an almost alarming pace.
