32-player online action... for free, even.
Activision and id Software announced today that Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, a fairly massive update to Return to Castle Wolfenstein's multiplayer modes. The game, developed by the bright minds at Splash Damage, is 100-percent free and available for download right now off Activision's site at www.castlewolfenstein.com; you don't even need to own the original RtCW to play it.Simply put, Enemy Territory is an expansion of the original RtCW's extensive team-based multiplayer modes. There are five types of soldiers this time around (Soldier, Field Ops, Covert Ops, Engineer and Medic), and teams can be divided into sub-squadrons for quicker communications. The scenarios themselves have been enhanced, too?every battle in Enemy Territory is a full campaign that's waged over a succession of three battle maps. Players can gain experience over the course of each campaign, reaching higher levels and learning new skills (mine detection, using a machine gun instead of a pistol as your secondary weapon, and so on) along the way.
"Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a new breed of online action games," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a release. "Each battlefield is a unique environment, with terrain ranging from dense foliage to open deserts, and weather conditions like snow and rain. Every distinctive mission requires a different strategy for victory; so while character advancement through battlefield promotions personalizes your appearance and skills, the fire-team communication, dynamic map overlay, and commander's voice facilitate teamwork in constructing defenses, scouting, infiltration and assault."
