Sony Sneaks in a PS2 Price Cut

"Old" PS2s drop to $179 to make way for new $199 packages.

Sony?s pre-E3 press conference flew by today without the barest whisper of the much-ballyhooed PS2 price cut. Expectations were that the company might drop the price of its hardware from $199 to $179, perhaps even $149. Instead, Sony announced a new $199 PS2 package deal that includes a network adaptor, built-in IR receiver, and better DVD capabilities.

Once the press conference concluded, word leaked out that Sony has dropped the price of the "old" PS2 to $179, according to a report by Reuters. The lower price applies only to the older PS2 models and is aimed at clearing out existing inventories to make way for the new $199 hardware package, which is due to hit shelves in June.

Although Reuters reports that there?s some question as to whether the price cut was prompted by retailers? response to the new PS2 package or was initiated by Sony itself, the $179 price was in effect Tuesday afternoon at retailers across the country. The next piece of the puzzle will be whether Microsoft and Nintendo decide to make corresponding price cuts of their own.
