AvP: Extinction will come to all game systems (all except the GameCube, that is) this summer. Uncharacteristically, it's a strategy game.
It's been a very, very long time since console owners have seen an Aliens versus Predator game released on anything they'd own. Older gamers will remember the assorted junky 16-bit action titles, while current PC fans may be familiar with the assorted first-person shooters that've come out in recent years. Now, Fox Interactive has teamed up with Electronic Arts to co-publish Aliens versus Predator: Extinction for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the summer of 2003, and?oddly enough?it's a tactical strategy game.In the world of AvP, there are three dominant species in the universe?humans (Colonial Marines in this game), acid-spitting aliens, and invisible predators. Naturally, they've been going at each other for generations, but the current battle?centered around the hotly-contested planet of LV-742?will be the ultimate climax to this war, the one conflict that will decide who gets to control the galaxies. And you're the general of your chosen side. Not that there's any pressure or anything, mind you.
All three species (marines, aliens and predators) are available for you to control, and all three have their distinct advantages and disadvantages on the battlefield?humans have the technology of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, predators have highly-honed hunting skills and the power of stealth, and aliens can impregnate both of them with facehuggers to increase their numbers. Each side has ten upgradeable combat units, allowing you to eventually build Predator Hydras, Marine Snipers, and giant facehugger carriers for the aliens. Nice. You'll get to use all this in a series of missions on LV-742, ranging from jungles to dark and mysterious caverns.
Extinction is currently being developed by the folks at Zono (makers of Metal Fatigue on the PC). We should have more info on it very soon, so stay tuned.
