Silent Hill 3 Screens

Konami gives us another glimpse at their latest trip down the road to insanity. Guess who's coming to dinner?

Konami's Silent Hill has always epitomized everything good and bad about the survival horror genre. As we said in our Silent Hill 2 review last year, the games themselves may have weird controls and overly simplified adventure elements (find four magic crystals to open this mystical door of doom, that sort of thing), but they're all such a spooky, over-the-top experience to play that most gamers forgive them for their faults.

Silent Hill 3, due to hit the PlayStation 2 next spring, won't be very different. Although Konami's promised that the controls will be easier to deal with this time around, the game will, at its core, be another dark (in both meanings of the word) horror adventure into the town that people are just dying to find a way out of. The hero's different this time?it's a girl named Heather instead of the strapping young men of the previous two games?but your abilities, and that sense of helplessness you get when hearing the footsteps of 10-foot-high monster from across the abandoned amusement park, will be much the same as before. Oh dear.

Be on the lookout for more info on the latest Silent Hill soon. And beware.
