World Series Baseball 2K3 Announced

Not half a year after Visual Concepts took WSB to the next generation, and the next year's title is already on its way. First pix inside.

Ah, what a wonderful time for baseball! ...if you're in San Francisco (like we are) or Anaheim, that is. Otherwise, it's kind of cold outside for baseball nowadays, isn't it? That isn't bothering Sega very much, though?they're in San Francisco too, after all?so they chose today to announce World Series Baseball 2K3, the latest title from Visual Concepts and developer Blue Shift. It'll hit the PlayStation 2 and Xbox next March; GameCube owners will have to make do with Home Run King for the time being.

2K3 will be the first Sega baseball game for the PS2?and for the Xbox too, really; Sega released an updated version of the Dreamcast 2K2 on the Xbox a while ago and called it "World Series Baseball" (no year appellation), but this'll be the first one engineered to take full advantage of the box's abilities. As for the game, so far it appears to be more evolution than revolution?there will be tons of new animations, new stadiums (including the Polo Grounds and Cincinnati's new Great American Stadium), and a wheelbarrow full of new player models. The Franchise Mode's deeper than ever, too: you'll get to choose your entire team staff, from the manager to your minor league directors and scouts. The Sega Sports Challenge (a new feature in all of Sega's 2K3 games) will allow you to compare offline stats on Sega's web site; there's no word on Xbox Live or PS2 online support yet.

"World Series Baseball 2K3 comes from a long legacy of quality baseball simulations that have been both entertaining and innovative," said Sega vice president Tom Nichols. "Building on last year's acclaimed Xbox release, World Series Baseball 2K3 will deliver a host of exciting features, including classic ballparks, an all-new jump button, new awards and the deepest Franchise Mode around."

Along with the WSB announcement, Sega provided us with three tantalizing screens from the 2K3 work-in-progress, all showing the Giants destroying the Angels in Game 6 of the series...erm...except that two of the three screens show Anaheim scoring outs against the Giants. Hey, Sega! Whose side are you on, anyway? Sheesh...in any case, stay tuned to GamePro.com for more WSB info as it arrives.
