Final Fantasy X Sequel Details Unraveled

The so-called "Final Fantasy X-2" will make its big Japanese debut next week. The preliminary details are all right here.

You know, we thought it was a little weird when we saw a picture of Yuna carrying two guns at Square's Tokyo Game Show merchandise booth. Now we know the rest of the story?according to a report from next week's issue of Japanese kids' magazine Shonen Jump, the lady will be starring in Final Fantasy X-2, a brand new PlayStation 2 game set in the Final Fantasy X universe due to come out next March in Japan.

FFX-2 will take place roughly two years after the last game ended. Yuna, the female summoner who put her life on the line to defeat Sin in the original FFX, does indeed have a couple of handguns this time around, along with a brand new costume. The world she lives in has changed quite a bit since the end of FFX?technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, to the point where you can even find computers and machines running in temples dotted around the world. Yuna will use these machines, including some kind of hovering vehicle, to help her navigate the game maps a bit more quickly than before.

Square will reportedly be inserting multiple new locations and several new battle-system enhancements into FFX-2. No details have come out quite yet, but early screenshots make reference to an "Active Mode" being available during battles. Hmm. You'll also be able to do a lot more than simply run around the game maps: jumping, climbing up objects, and more skills will all be useable.

As for the plot of the new game...well...Square is keeping that to themselves for the time being. After two years of peace, it seems, some kind of new threat is menacing the world?exactly what is still unknown. Oh well.

These basic details will likely be fleshed out by Square at the press conference they're holding in Tokyo next week, so stay tuned for more coverage. Come to think of it, wasn't there supposed to be a second FFX "side story" game coming soon as well? We could've sworn Square mentioned one at a conference last May...hopefully it's still being worked on.
