Street Racing Syndicate, one of the first games made under 3DO's "stop making junk" philosophy, is coming out next year. Would you bet your lady on a drag race?
The 3DO Company sent official word today on Street Racing Syndicate, a new car game that's one of their first multiplatform titles for this generation. Currently under development by Eutechnyx Ltd. in Britain (they make lots of racing games, including the upcoming Big Mutha Truckers from Empire Interactive), the game's coming out for PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube sometime in 2003.SRS can be summed up?on paper, anyway?as Road Rash taken to the world of four-wheel street racing (very huge stuff in Oakland, home of GamePro Towers, we might add). The game's basic Street mode lets you create a character and start him off racing in one of three cities, trying to build his name by joining races both illegal and officially sanctioned. Your car is completely customizable (3DO's getting official licenses from real aftermarket sellers), and you can bet everything from cash and pink slips to the girlfriends of rival drivers on the outcome of each race. Oh my. Your real enemy here, though, is the fuzz?if you cause too much trouble they'll impound your car and/or throw you in jail.
"With SRS, we have captured the essence of underground racing -- high stakes, high speed, and customization of realistically detailed cars," said 3DO head Trip Hawkins. "Every race has a lot at stake, including pink slips, cash, and, of course, the ladies' respect."
SRS is part of 3DO's new strategy of spending more time and cash producing each of the games they produce. We'll see how it turns out?the company's in more-or-less OK position financially, and it's always nice to see companies living instead of dying. Even if they did make Portal Runner.
